When It Bleeds It Leads

That’s an old newsroom saying about which stories will be placed at the top of the list for publication or broadcast. It satisfies the natural compulsion of the public to gawk at the bad news along the way. The problem with that reporting philosophy in times like these is that it can cause you to take your eye off of your bountiful blessings and make you think things are worse than they really are.

Warren Buffet says it’s time to invest in American companies because fear is driving down the price of fundamentally good companies. At Berkshire Hathaway, their philosophy is this “We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful.”

Well, what can you do if you are not the richest man in the world? Learn to stay focused on the long term. Stay focused on working hard and taking care of those who are near and dear to you like your family and friends.

If you want to make more money, then make yourself more valuable to your family, your friends and your company. Jim Rohm says that to make yourself more valuable you must educate yourself beyond your present level of education and interests.

Zig Ziglar teaches us to say to ourselves every morning when we wake up; “Today I will be a successful sales professional and I will learn something today that will make me more professional tomorrow”.

Practice the Golden Rule, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. Take time out to lend a hand to someone less fortunate. You will enjoy the benefits of the Law of Reciprocity to build trust, and enhance your work, family, and social relationships.

Stephen Covey, author of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, says people have an “emotional bank account” to describe the principle of reciprocity and the give and take that goes on in a relationship between two people. Just like an account at a bank, you must deposit good will in the other person’s emotional bank account before you can make withdrawals.

Robert Schuller says; Tough times never last, but tough people do.” Whatever difficulties you are dealing with will pass and when things are back on track, will you have a positive balance of in the emotional bank accounts of your friends and coworkers or will you be a debtor who has been living on the generous emotional credit of those around you?

Get up every morning and say to yourself, this is going to be a Super Fantastic Day and then get out there and make it happen. Never ever give up. It is never too late to become the person you deserve to be.
